BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Grey Bruce Health Services, the organization that runs our local health care system, underwent a sudden rebranding this summer. On September 8, it was announced that facilities and services would be adopting the new name Brightshores Health System.
The announcement came just weeks before the new Markdale hospital was officially opened but signs and flags sporting the new look flanked the entrance.
Without a public process to discuss the change, many people were surprised and some were very critical of the moniker. While the organization oversees medical care in hospitals across the region, including Owen Sound, Lion's Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton and Wiarton, not all communities on the list can claim the proximity of land alongside a large body of water (shores). Conspiracy theories about the process and politics behind the name change flourished and some people even talked about withholding hospital donations in protest.
Despite the outrage, Brightshores is here and here to stay. Our hospitals continue to need our help to pay for the equipment which costs are not covered by government funding. Hospitals are not only important to the health of our communities but provide employment and have a positive impact on the local economy.
This sentiment was never better expressed than by a letter-to-the-editor from a resident of Grey Highlands.
