BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — A new phrase entered our lexicon at the end of 2021. 'COVID-19 fatigue' challenged many of us to keep up with health protocols. As time wore on, our Grey Bruce Public Health gurus told us that individuals were disregarding precautions while symptomatic, and had been frequently out and about for a week or more prior to diagnosis, resulting in multiple potential exposures and high risk contacts (resulting in further positive cases).
Who could blame us? It had been almost two years of mandates and measures designed to keep us at home and away from other people in general. New anxieties were setting in, as well. Health authorities were telling us that the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines were becoming inadequate in the fight to keep us healthy.
Enter Grey County Reads in January, 2022, South Grey News' answer to everything that ails you. After all, if we are meant to stay inside and continue to expel all external fun from our lives, why not escape from reality, immersed in a good book?!
That may be a long-winded way of introducing our annual reading contest but it seemed to work for us back then, as enough people flocked to the pages of Grey County Reads to make it the third most popular story of the year.
Seven book champions took on the task of reading Canadian-authored books, as selected by our public libraries. In the end, What Comes from Spirit by Richard Wagamese, advocated by Jennifer Bechan of Fresh Start Duct Cleaning Services Inc. claimed top prize and the Grey Highlands Public Library won $200 worth of books courtesy of Speaking Volumes Books and Audio in Flesherton. Three voters were chosen randomly to also win. In addition, What Comes From Spirit provided us with some sage advice on how to keep calm and carry on.
The next Grey County Reads will start up under more favourable circumstances in mid-January. Get ready for another exciting contest. Stay tuned for details.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
