On Saturday, May 24, at the Durham Town Hall from 11 am to 2:30 pm, save money, save a beloved household item! The West Grey Library, in partnership with Earth Works West Grey, is holding a free FBI: Fix Broken Items event on Saturday, September 14, at the Durham Town Hall on George St. Commonly known as repair cafés, these free sessions encourage repairing items rather than replacing them.
Bring your broken, portable items to see if they can be given new life — think lamps, fans, clothing and soft goods, wooden chairs, toys, garden tools, small engines and bikes. Bring any specialized parts with you — fixers have the knowledge, experience and basic parts like screws, nails and hand tools.
The Library is also searching for more volunteers. A little skill is important, of course, but your enthusiasm and willingness to share what you know is key. Not only do volunteer fixers support the community by sharing repair know-how to keep items out of landfills, but it’s a great way to meet other fix-it enthusiasts — and even enjoy new friendships!
And the Library’s Trivia Night at the Country Corner in Durham comes up after that, on Wednesday, May 28, starting at 7 pm. This is a fundraiser for the Library, and at $10 a person, it’s a great evening for a great cause. Teams of 2-6 (14+), are welcome. Come to the Country Corner, 357 Durham Rd W in Durham by 6 pm if you want to eat — the kitchen closes when play begins!
Pre-registration is a must: spaces are limited. Sign up on Eventbrite, drop in to Durham Branch, call 519-369-2107 or email the Library at adultprograms@westgreylibrary.com

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
