West Grey Library loves to play, while the Friends prepare for a giant book sale

West Grey Library Book Sale

This is Ontario Public Library Week, and West Grey Library has come to play — and slay — with games and eerie local stories!

On Wednesday, October 18 at 2:30 pm at Durham Branch, the Library series The History of Card Games continues. Our host Tim continues his charge through popular card games — this time focusing on Gin (rummy). Previous session participants have enjoyed learning the history of the game and then trying it out for a hand or two.

Coming up later in the month, the Library’s Historian-in-residence, Mat Johnson, will once again be available to answer questions or just chat on both local and military history on the fourth Wednesday of the month, October 25, from 10:30 am to noon. This is a drop-in program and there’s no charge. Publisher of Marathon of History and podcast creator of a program of the same name, Mat is a true history enthusiast, as well as a model and miniature fabricator for museums.

Mat is following up this month’s visit with a presentation with colleague Stephanie McMullen from Grey Roots Archive, who will be presenting Spooky Stories from West Grey, a product of her recent research. Stephanie has worked in historic site interpretation, education programs, program development, and exhibit writing and development, but this promises to be one of the ghostlier activities on her resume!

Unless otherwise indicated, all sessions are free of charge, but pre-registration is required at adultprogram@westgreylibrary.com or by calling 519-369-2107.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.

Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
