West Grey Library marks Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous People Day at West Grey Public Library

West Grey Library now has an Elder-in-residence in the person of Diane Owen, a Metis elder. Diane has been leading the Biindigin (“Come In – Welcome”) series at the Library for a year, a series which will continue for 2023-24. She has also arranged for a package to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Wednesday, June 21st.

The package includes quizzes, a cultural crossword and some fascinating information on the origins of some of our most popular foods. Diane has lent the Library a copy of Edward S. Curtis Portraits: The Many Faces of the Native Americans, originally published in 1906. It is currently being repaired and should be available for display in time for September’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30th.

Also this week, Jack Serre will be leading an introduction to fly-fishing at the Durham Branch on Thursday, June 22nd at 4:30pm. This fascinating and graceful sport is full of lore and logistics, and Jack’s program promises to provide a practical look at getting started. Pre-registration is required; no charge to attend.

For more information or to register for any program, contact the Library at 519-369-2107 or email adultprograms@westgreylibrary.com.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.

Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
