On July 18, 2025, officers with the West Grey Police Service arrested a male for public intoxication in the Municipality of West Grey. The accused was uncooperative during the arrest.
While being transported to Hanover District Hospital for assessment, the accused became violent inside the police cruiser. He slipped his handcuffs from behind his back to the front, repeatedly kicked the cruiser’s partition window until it broke, and entered the front cabin. Once inside, he assaulted an officer and attempted to remove the patrol rifle from its mount.
Officers were able to gain control of the accused, removing him from the vehicle. He continued to resist, physically fighting with officers and biting them multiple times. The accused was placed in hand and leg shackles, and a protective helmet was used to prevent further self-harm or injury to officers. He was then transported to Hanover District Hospital, where he remains under police custody and medical assessment.
A search of the accused’s belongings led to the seizure of ammunition, brass knuckles, and a spring-assisted knife.
The accused is currently bound by a Probation Order with conditions to keep the peace and not possess weapons as defined by the Criminal Code. He is also subject to a lifetime Prohibition Order following prior convictions for Weapons Dangerous and Possession of a Loaded Firearm.
As a result of this incident, the accused has been charged with nine new criminal offences. He was held for a bail hearing and has been remanded into custody.
