Turn clocks ahead this weekend!

Daylight Saving Time in Canada

BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — A sure sign of Spring is that moment when we turn the clocks ahead to receive more sunlight in the evening hours. That moment arrives this weekend! Yes, in most of Canada, Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins at 2:00 am local time, on the second Sunday in March (March 13). When DST begins, turn your clocks ahead one hour.

You may ask "why so early?" Previously, Canada had observed DST from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October. However, through legislation passed in 2006, DST now begins three weeks earlier on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. This change kept Canada's DST pattern consistent with the United States which enacted into law a broad energy bill that extended DST in the same manner.

Hold on to your hats, because warmer weather is also on the way for southern Ontario. Looking ahead, daytime highs will park themselves above zero in about a week or so. The first official day of Spring will arrive not long afterwards on March 20.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
