Grey County secures federal funding to support transition to low-emission fleet vehicles

Electric vehicle charging hookup

Grey County is charging ahead with electrifying its fleet of vehicles. Twenty Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers will be installed at four County-owned sites through the Charging Ahead: Electrifying Fleets in Grey County project, funded in part through Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan) Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

"This infrastructure investment represents a significant step forward in Grey County's commitment to reducing our corporate greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning our fleet to clean transportation," says Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs. "These charging stations will not only support our fleet transition to zero-emission vehicles but will also enable operational cost savings over the life cycle of the vehicles."

The fleet-focused project will support the County's strategic plan to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions. Level 2 chargers will be installed at four locations:

  • 6 chargers at Grey County Administration Building
  • 2 chargers at Ayton Transportation Depot
  • 6 chargers at Chatsworth Transportation Depot
  • 6 chargers at Clarksburg Transportation Depot

Through NRCan, ZEVIP funding is providing $100,000 towards the project (approximately 50%). Matching funds for the remainder of the project exist within the 2025 County budget.

“With this federal funding, Grey County will install 20 new EV chargers to support its growing electric fleet — reducing emissions and lowering operational costs. It’s a practical investment that supports our national climate objectives while delivering long-term benefits to the community.” - The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

The project aligns with Grey County's Going Green in Grey climate action plan, which includes targets to reduce corporate emissions by 20% by 2026 and to net-zero by 2045. The County's fleet vehicles account for around 38% of the County's corporate greenhouse gas emissions. Once the chargers are in place, the County will begin by purchasing two electric half-ton pickup trucks. Transitioning to zero-emission vehicles when replacing light-duty vehicles is key to meeting reduction goals and achieving operational cost savings through the higher efficiency of electric vehicles.

Construction on the fleet charging stations has begun, following engineering and design work that was completed in June, July and August 2025. The stations are expected to be fully operational by March 31, 2026.
