Increasing fatality rates prompt Grey Bruce OPP Traffic Act Blitz

On November 25, 2022, the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a Highway Traffic Act blitz as part of an ongoing effort to address dangerous driving habits and the role they play in contributing to fatal, and non-fatal motor vehicle collisions. Year to date, Grey Bruce has one of the highest fatality rates in West Region.

Members from the Grey Bruce Traffic Management Unit (TMU), West Region OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team (TIM E), and Highway Safety Division Media Relations attended for the day long event.

Throughout the day, 28 drivers were charged with speeding related offences. Officers also laid four charges pertaining to commercial motor vehicles, one of which had improper brakes, and was put out of service.

At a conference held earlier in the year at OPP West Region Headquarters, Acting Superintendent Shawn Johnson stated "When you factor in alcohol or drug impairment, distraction, speed, or other aggressive behaviours, you have a recipe for tragedy. These are collisions that don't need to happen; they are entirely preventable, and it needs to stop."

The Grey Bruce OPP along with their traffic safety partners will continue their efforts to address contributing factors in motor vehicle collisions. When travelling on our roadways please plan ahead for unexpected delays, slow down, drive according to the road and weather conditions, stay off of your mobile and entertainment devices, and find alternative ways to get home if you plan on consuming alcohol and drugs.

These collisions are preventable, and everyone plays a part in making that happen.
