A year to remember: Top 10 stories of 2022 - #7

BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — It seems like so long ago but it really wasn't. The COVID-19 pandemic had us huddled in our homes, afraid to gather with friends and neighbours and in many cases, bored out our minds!

So, it's no surprise that once given the chance, we'd flock to outdoor events and social interactions like a post-pandemic Extra gum commercial. Such was the case at the start of the summer when Canada Day gave us the perfect excuse to party.

From community breakfasts to kids games, live music, BBQ dinners and fireworks, celebration was in the air. Canada Day events across the region got underway following two years of frustrating circumstances. The news that live events were back quickly rose to become the seventh most popular story of 2022.

The Durham Homecoming marked a milestone 150th anniversary that weekend, inviting all past and present residents to join in the family fun and entertainment. It became the biggest local event so far, this century.

The result was a weekend to remember in southern Grey County. Take a look back at our original story:

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
