in Chatsworth, Grey Highlands, Southgate, West Grey
May 05, 2025
April 30, 2025, at 8:15 pm, Hanover Police officers with assistance from the West Grey Police responded to a family dispute. Officers arrived on scene and observed a distraught intoxicated male climb a hydro tower with high voltage lines armed with an axe. Officers determined the male was drinking from a bottle of liquor as he climbed. At times the male reached close to 70 feet above ground.
The area was contained by Hanover and West Grey police officers while Grey County Paramedics, Hanover Fire Department and Hydro One personnel staged in the area for precautionary reasons.
The OPP ERT Team, OPP negotiators and an Incident Commander were called to assist, however, the matter resolved shortly after they were requested, and their assistance was not required at the scene.
As a result of the investigation, shortly before 10 pm, the male suspect returned to the ground on his own accord and was taken into custody without further incident. A 32-year-old West Grey man was charged with Weapons Dangerous to Public Peace, Mischief and Breach of Probation. He was held overnight to sober and released from custody this morning scheduled to appear in Walkerton Court next month.
The scene was maintained by police until Hydro One high voltage specialists were able to attend and retrieve the axe from the tower that was left behind by the suspect. There was no disruption to any hydro customers as a result of this incident.
The Hanover Police Service wants to thank their policing partners, the other first responders and hydro officials for their assistance in resolving this incident safely.
