BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Some members of the Municipal Seniors Advisory Committee welcomed one of the Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART) vehicles that will begin door-to-door service in Grey Highlands on May 2.  The service will be provided to residents who cannot travel by conventional means because of their physical or mental challenges. These challenges include the required use of crutches, a cane, a walker or wheelchair; visual impairments; cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s and/or developmental challenges. Challenges need not be permanent; they can be temporary and/or seasonal.

SMART service is already provided to nine other municipalities including Chatsworth, Hanover, Southgate and West Grey. Available from Monday to Saturday, rides will be available to destinations up to 20 km from SMART area borders and to select dialysis clinics.

The cost to access the transit service is $2 per trip plus 55 cents/km. There is a minimum charge of $7.50 per trip and a flat $22/hour fee may be applied when a vehicle is required to wait for an occupant. Before booking a ride, register using their online client registration form. Completion and approval will qualify you or the person you are assisting for service. Once approved, you can book your ride using the online reservation form.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
