Markdale raised, now Toronto-based singer songwriter Oliver James Brooks unveils fourth studio album: In a Long Little While

Oliver James Brooks - In a Long Little While

Renowned singer-songwriter and Grey County native Oliver James Brooks, has announced the release of his fourth studio album, In A Little Long While. This alternative folk collection is a testament to Brooks' commitment to crafting raw, organic, and real sounds that resonate with listeners.

In A Little Long While marks Oliver James Brooks' fourth studio album, a musical journey that unfolded over the past two years at River Valley Studio — essentially, Oliver's living room. Utilizing vintage gear from the 70s for recording, mixing, and mastering, the album embraces the analog imperfections, with sounds that wobble and tape hisses that add a nostalgic warmth.

The overarching theme of the record is one of contrast, delving into the duality of day-to-day life — the highs, the lows, the sense of being lost, and the joy of being found.

Of his latest musical offering, Canadian Beats music blog said, “Oliver’s rich vocals co-exist with the somber, mysterious beat”

To bring his vision to life, Oliver was fortunate to collaborate with a group of exceptionally talented friends. Longtime friend Annie Rowlinson played bass, while the multi-talented producer and drummer Jack Emblem provided the rhythmic backbone. Adding another layer to the album's depth, Oliver's brother-in-law, Nick Johnston, contributed his skills on the keys. The record was expertly finished and mastered on tape by Joao Carvalho, utilizing his vintage AMPEX ATR-102.

"This record would not have come together the way it did without the help of the individuals mentioned above — thanks, guys," expressed Brooks.

Originating from Markdale, Oliver James Brooks draws inspiration from musical legends such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joy Division, and Elliott Smith. His musical focus centres on capturing raw, authentic sounds that resonate with a diverse audience.

Oliver has previously worked with industry luminaries and earned comparisons to renowned artists like Neil Young, Kurt Vile, and Gordon Lightfoot. His 2021 release, Storm Chasing, garnered critical acclaim, with Americana UK describing it as "hypnotic," Indie88 noting "ominous vocal lines," and Exclaim! including it in their list of top Canadian songs. The track received airplay on CBC, and The Walleye labeled Brooks "a musician to watch out for."
