BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — The Grey Highlands Municipal League is a group of local residents who made an impact on the last municipal election. Providing information and support for campaigners, the group helped swell the number of local candidates to record levels and distributed an organized menu of Council contenders and their issues to the voting public.
The League's website explains that "each month, decisions are made that affect our towns, our roads, local services, and the protection of wetlands and farmland." The League encourages community participation to help shape those decisions.
Thus far, this has described the League's raison d'être. But now that a new Council has been chosen, the League is looking beyond those decisions made by elected representatives and setting its sights on community volunteers, hoping to increase participation in the development of new projects and initiatives which may or may not require cooperation and support from the municipality.
Toward this end, organizers have arranged for a two hour session billed as a Community Building Forum about how local residents can make a difference in Grey Highlands. The event will introduce a dozen existing community organizations active in Grey Highlands communities. The event will also attempt to create a handful of exciting new projects.
The Community Building Forum will take place at the Flesherton Kinplex on Sunday, May 7 from 2-4 pm. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring their ideas too.
At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
