BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Meta (Facebook & Instagram) announced recently it would begin to block news availability on its Canadian platforms in reaction to the federal government decision to pass Bill C-18 which requires tech giants like Google and Meta to pay news outlets for content they share or post on their platforms.
On August 8, Meta removed all of the posts from the South Grey News Facebook page. Lumped in with other Canadian media giants, our Facebook account has also been blocked from posting new content. As such, Canadians, and readers of South Grey News, will no longer be able to receive local coverage through links or posts on our Facebook or Instagram accounts.
The end of access to news on its social media sites for all Canadian users comes before Bill C-18, the Online News Act, comes into force. Meta’s decision comes while the Department of Canadian Heritage continues with the process of drafting up guidelines on how the law will be implemented. The law is expected to take effect by the end of 2023.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
