BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Local events continue to make a comeback in 2022, following two long years of pandemic mitigation measures and restrictions. Case in point: Holstein Maplefest made a successful return to our social calendars April 9-10 with many entertaining outdoor demonstrations and activities.
Of course, maple syrup was the advertised star of the event with many sweet confections available for purchase and a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausage and beans served to a never-ending lineup of hungry customers.
Members of the Dundalk Fire Department were on hand promoting fire safety and showing off their equipment.
Presented by the Egremont Optimist Club, this year's event was the 26th such celebration held at Love's Sugar Bush in Holstein. Although it was another frigid day in April, families crowded the hay wagons and enjoyed the bumpy but fun ride down to the Sugar Bush.
There, they were greeted with hot cider and coffee before wandering through woodcarving, log-sawing, candlemaking, sheep shearing and blacksmithing demonstrations. The Boy Scouts rope bridge challenged kids of all ages to keep their balance above the ground and everyone was encouraged to watch six different ways to make maple syrup.

In the big tent, Bex in Motion wowed the crowd with feats of acrobatics, juggling and mesmerizing hula hoop tricks, infused with a little comedy and some fire thrown in for dramatic effect.
The Wild Ontario Raptor Show featured up-close encounters with live birds of prey and provided environmental education to those in attendance.

Four Paws Flying Entertainment performed on Sunday and included World Champion skilled disc-catching dogs in an amazing display of high flying agility.
This weekend event was preceded by the Egremont Optimist Maple Glazed Pork drive-thru dinner held last Friday, April 1. A sold-out success, the mouthwatering meal included a maple-glazed pork roast, sides and homemade maple desserts.

Organizers were excited to finally get these events off the ground after the organizing committee gave the official go-ahead in early March.
At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort.
