Grey County fulfilled a long-standing commitment to rural healthcare during the June 10 Council meeting with a cheque presentation of $780,000 to the Centre Grey Health Services Foundation. These funds have been set aside in a reserve since 2006 anticipating a capital contribution towards the Centre Grey Hospital in Markdale. The County donated the land, valued at $220,000, for the hospital in 2005, bringing the County’s total contribution to $1,000,000.
“We are delighted to see this project moving forward,” said Grey County Warden Selwyn Hicks. “The current Centre Grey Hospital serves as an important rural service hub, and this new facility will help them continue to serve our community with modern equipment and room to grow.”
The construction of the new hospital was approved in February of this year and began in March. The finished hospital will cost close to $70 million, with 10 percent funded through community donations and 90 percent through various government funds. The Centre Grey Health Services Foundation has asked Grey County to increase its contribution by an additional $150,000 to help cover gaps in the foundation’s funding projections. Council accepted the request and will take it to the Health Care Funding Initiatives Task Force for consideration in the 2022 budget.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
