Heavy rainfall on August 7, resulted in elevated water levels and fast-flowing rivers, caused flooding in downtown Durham and at least two serious road washouts.
“West Grey police, fire and public works staff responded quickly to ensure public safety and to protect our municipal infrastructure,” said Mayor Christine Robinson. “Ongoing assessments will be completed over the next few days as West Grey staff and conservation authority officials continue monitoring the situation.” The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) issued a Water Safety Statement that is in effect until 10 a.m. August 10, 2021. SVCA advises that more rain and thunderstorms could further increase water levels and flow speeds.
“West Grey is blessed with many rivers and streams, and at times like this, it’s important to remind citizens to take extra precaution around fast-moving water,” said Mayor Robinson. “Be especially vigilant, and remember to keep children and pets away from river banks and streams.” At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias.
