Flesherton Farmers' Market opens Saturday May 18, 2024

What are you looking forward to this summer? Eating outdoors? Going to the beach? Swimming? Hiking?

How about shopping?

Yes, the Flesherton and District Farmers' Market (FDFM) opens this weekend, as do several others in nearby communities. But the FDFM is southern Grey County's true farmers' market, boasting a majority of growers and producers, now entering its 33rd year.

From the May long weekend until Thanksgiving in the Fall, the market takes up residence at the Flesherton Arena pavilion every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. Over 20 vendors will bring the freshest local produce, meats, honey, maple syrup, homemade breads, cookies and jams, as well as hand-crafted wood bowls, hand-turned pens, artisanal candles, soaps and original artwork.

There will be some new vendors too. To start the season, Dee's Quiet Café will have a light gourmet vegan menu of sandwiches, coffee and latte. Later in the season, they will swing into full café mode with a food truck serving everything from fresh cut fries, breakfast sandwiches and donairs to BBQ bunwiches, lettuce wraps and power bowls.

For Opening Day, market organizers have planned a warm welcome to the season with free cupcakes and a scavenger hunt for kids to win summer toys. Members of the Hanley Institute will be on hand with candy floss and face painting.

As far as the weather goes, Environment and Climate Change Canada senior climatologist David Phillips has been quoted to say that "Ontario residents can expect warmer temperatures for spring and summer." After Canada's warmest winter on record, Grey County residents are hoping for bearable heat and a low quantity of black flies and mosquitoes. But be prepared this Saturday with sun screen and bug repellent.

The FDFM is at 101 Highland Drive in Flesherton. For more information about vendors and special events, visit the FDFM website.
