BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — They say a good farmer is nothing more, nor less, than a handy man (or woman) with a sense of humour. But for those of us who know that they are so much more, 'tis the season to celebrate those who toil on the land and judging by the height of the corn, it must be Fall Fair season again! So dust off your straw hats and polish up your best belt buckles, here's a rundown of what's to come over the next few weeks in southern Grey County.
August 26-28 Markdale Fall Fair
The theme is 'Homegrown, Proudly Shown' for this year's Fair. All the popular exhibits and demonstrations are returning. A full list is available in this year's Fall Fair Book. http://www.markdalefallfair.ca...
Among the many highlights, there will be lots of games and activities for the little ones. Grand River Inflatables will be in the Kid's Zone at the Markdale Fall Fair once again.
The Company of Egr Grey Guard is a medieval combat group that will be demonstrating all afternoon on Saturday. The Ultimutts will perform three 30-minute sets throughout the afternoon as well.
The Beer Gardens will be hosted by the Hitting Bombs Ball Team, with music provided by Shea Whelan from noon to 3 pm and local band Rewired from 4-7 pm.
Two age divisions will vie for the championship in the 1st Annual Markdale Fall Fair Cornhole Tournament which begins at 1 pm on August 27 — $20 per team of two. No equipment or experience is necessary. Visit moondogcornhole.com to pre-register.
Admissions for the 2022 fair are by donation.
September 2-5 Durham Fall Fair Weekend
This event kicks off with a Spaghetti Dinner at 6pm ($15 per person) followed by the traditional Cake and Quilt Auction and the Junior and Senior Ambassador of the Fair Competitions.
Something a little different will set this year apart. In lieu of typical exhibitions and displays, a Fall Fair themed Craft Show with all those prize winning quilts, baby blankets, doll houses and beautiful flowers, will take its place. The Tea Table will provide sandwiches, pies and drinks.
On Saturday the auditorium is playing host to High Tea for the Red Hat Society and in the evening we will be serving a Beef on a Bun Dinner.
In the Big Tent from noon to 5 pm, you will find the Fun Factory Games, Story Time with the West Grey Library, Farm Safety Booth, Milk Booth, Colouring Contest and Bike Draw. Rick Tourlousse will take over the venue and rock the house with a dance to close out the night.
4H cattle, sheep and horse shows will be back, as will the Antique Tractor pull on Sunday. The Kiddie Tractor Pull will take place starting at 7pm on Friday and continue through Saturday as well.
For more information, visit the Durham Agricultural Society website.
September 9-11 Dundalk Fall Fair
It's the 165th edition of this popular event. The theme of this year’s fair is 'Picture This — capturing life in photos'. It's a full three days of fun. A complete list of events is packed into this year's Fall Fair Guide.
The Square, Step Dancing & Clogging Competition & Fiddle Contest is back, starting at 10 am on Saturday.
Enjoy livestock shows, tractor pulls, antique and classic car show and demolition derby — everything you'd ever want in a fall fair experience! A Pedal Tractor Pull will hit the outdoor stage at 2:30 pm.
Be enthralled by Jason George Wildlife Photographer Adventures, Pet Show and the many agricultural exhibits on display. Also, for the sheer fun of it, be sure to catch garden tractor races on Sunday at 1 pm.
Bicycle draws and movies for both kids and teens should keep the whole family engaged and entertained on Saturday, while Black Rock Climbers, Inflatables & Rock Climbing Wall will provide excitement for the young ones on Saturday and Sunday.
Admission to the Dundalk Fall Fair is Friday evening: $5.00, Saturday: $8.00, Sunday: $8.00, Weekend pass: $15.00 (available all weekend), Student: $2.00, Children 12 & under are free.
September 16-18 Feversham Fall Fair
After a two year hiatus, the Feversham Fall Fair is coming back and organizers are hoping to make it better than ever.
In the lead up to the big Fall Fair weekend, the Agricultural Society is selling tickets on a beautiful quilt, assembled with blocks that were submitted by community members to the Quilt Block Challenge Fundraiser last fall. The second prize is $100 and third prize is $50. Tickets are $10 each, available from any Ag Society member or via the group's Facebook page, and the winning ticket will be drawn on September 27.
The fair, itself, promises to have an awesome Kidszone. Activities and events will include games, ice cream party, face painting, bouncy balls, inflatable Jungle Tunnel Obstacle Course, the Bill Nuvo Experience with magic, comedy, juggling and balancing stunts and Purpleman, a walkabout entertainer who does it all! Top Shot Hockey will also be on site with skills challenges and an interactive hockey experience for kids.
Watch for all of the great agricultural, craft and baking displays and competitions, indoor and outdoor vendors and much more. Visit the Feversham Fall Fair Facebook page for updates as the dates get closer.
