Grey County Warden Brian Milne: Embracing the diversity of cultures and lifestyles in Grey County

Grey County Warden Brian Milne

On Thursday, July 13, Grey County Warden Brian Milne released the following statement:

At Grey County we believe there is strength in the diversity of our community. Diversity can mean many things: our identity, culture, and beliefs, including but not limited to ethnicity, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and ability. We also recognize everyone brings unique experiences, values, and contributions which add value to our community.

By embracing inclusivity and promoting understanding we can create a community that is strong, welcoming, and willing to learn. When we are intolerant of those who are different from us, and unwilling to learn, we create an environment that is divisive and unwelcoming, and even hateful. Let’s challenge discrimination and hate when we see it and instead choose to learn from each other, respect each other, and accept each other for who we are.

As Warden, I challenge everyone to participate in events, workshops and initiatives that promote diversity and celebrate cultures and beliefs that differ from your own. Listen with empathy, challenge your own assumptions, and engage in thoughtful conversations. There are already great resources in our community, such as Grey Bruce Pride, Welcoming Grey Bruce, and the Grey Bruce Local Immigration Partnership. I encourage you to seek them out. I hope that representatives of these organizations will attend a community services committee meeting or County Council to help us understand how our services could be improved to be more welcoming.

As Winston Churchill once said, “Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.” Let’s respect each other and celebrate the diversity of our community to make Grey County a place where all voices are valued and everyone feels welcome.

Brian Milne, Grey County Warden

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.

Please consider supporting South Grey News with a donation in lieu of a subscription fee and let us know that our efforts are appreciated. Thank you.
