OPP remind drivers Don't Veer for Deer

Don't veer for deer graphic.

The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is issuing a reminder to drivers to "Don't Veer for Deer" after responding to eight collisions in the past week involving motor vehicles and deer.

The OPP advises motorists to stay alert, especially in rural and wooded areas, and to follow several safety tips to avoid accidents:

  • Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for deer, particularly during dawn and dusk when visibility is lower, and deer are most active.
  • Use High Beams: When safe, use your high beams to help spot deer early, as they reflect the light.
  • Avoid Swerving: If you see a deer in your path, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can lead to loss of control or collisions with other vehicles.
  • Do Not Rely on Devices: Devices like deer whistles or reflectors are not foolproof-reduce speed and stay cautious.
  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep space between your vehicle and others to allow time to react if a deer crosses unexpectedly.

If involved in a collision with a deer, drivers should contact the OPP's non-emergency line if there are no injuries. Any accident involving more than $2000 in damages or injuries must be reported to the police.
