BY SOUTHGREY.CA STAFF — Teardown: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up is a handbook of democratic solutions to energize civic engagement. It was written by local author and community organizer Dave Meslin, whose resumé includes the creation of Unlock Democracy, the Grey Highlands Municipal League and the Hopeville Kite Festival, among many other ambitious initiatives.

His book has been adapted into a new 6-episode series titled Unrigged, which will air every Sunday night at 8 pm on TV Ontario (TVO). The first episode, Bloodsport premieres this weekend. It explores the impact of polarization on our political landscape and examines how mob-driven verbal warfare and ruthless tribalism shape our discourse. The show will explore ways to transform our political environment from conflict to constructive engagement, featuring reflections from current and former politicians on their own behaviour.

Future episodes will delve into the ideas expressed in Dave Meslin's book, described as a recipe for change, a cure for cynicism and a war on apathy. Meslin untangles the challenges facing modern democracy in Canada, connecting with experts and everyday Ontarians to uncover real, on-the-ground solutions. From breaking down barriers to revealing blind spots, Meslin highlights simple, creative, and proven ways to strengthen democratic institutions and processes.

"So many talented people worked on this project, and I'm excited to see it finally on-screen," said Meslin.

The series hits TV less than two months before the 2024 US election and less than one year before the next Canadian federal election to take place sometime on or before October 20, 2025.

Join Dave Meslin on this eye-opening journey to explore ways to fix a broken system—one solution at a time. Watch the YouTube trailer.
