Council: Chatsworth community hub building not proceeding

At the May 7 Committee of the Whole meeting, Township of Chatsworth Council received a report setting out options to fund Phase A of the Community Hub Project in the Village of Chatsworth. Phase A consists of a new community hall, kitchen and bar area seniors activity room, day care, health care facility and community outreach.

Phase B included the ice surface, indoor walking track and dressing rooms and was planned for future years as funding allows.

Two options were put forward to fund Phase A, with a potential building construction start date of 2030. The proposal put forward in the report would see a dedicated contribution to reserves over the next five years of 1% per year of the tax levy. The proposal also was contingent on receiving funding from upper levels of government (Provincial and Federal), a debenture and community fundraising.

In a recorded 3-2 vote, Council defeated the proposal, indicating that based on costing and other Township projects, that the Township cannot afford to finance the project through debt, or by raising taxes to contribute to the reserve account and therefore will not be continuing with this project.
