The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Anti-Human Trafficking Committee, and Bluewater District Board of Education (BWDSB) partnered to bring anti-human trafficking education to Bruce County and Grey County schools.

The Recognizing Exploitation, A Syllabus to End Trafficking (R.E.S.E.T.) curriculum is four sessions offered over four weeks on:

  • Risk Factors
  • Consent
  • Online Safety
  • Asking for Help

Delivered by BWDSB Child and Education Workers (CYW), the lessons are age appropriate, offer local resources, compassion-based, and interactive for our students.

"I am so proud of the time and effort that our staff and students have put into this new programming. We have already completed 376 lessons for all Grade 7 and 8 students across Grey and Bruce counties. We know the positive impact of this program when we have students advocating for themselves, reaching out during the early stages, knowing the resources, and feeling empowered to minimize risk and promote protective factors" - Katie Simpson, Clinical Manager, Bluewater District School Board.

"Ontario is a densely populated province, and the reality is, it is a hub for human trafficking accounting for about 70% of cases in Canada. We need to recognize that human trafficking is happening here, that it's happening in rural communities, and we must work together to help stop this crime that is so devastating for the victims. Most victims are female with an average recruitment age of 13, so it is imperative that we talk to our youth about human trafficking. I am very proud of this partnership that brings such vital training to our students" - Acting Inspector Keegan Wilcox, Interim Detachment Commander, South Bruce OPP.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.

South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
