Vehicle enters Saugeen River, deceased identified

On December 29 at approximately 4:15 p.m. West Grey Police Service was dispatched to Victoria Street in the Township of Ayton following reports of a suspicious vehicle travelling at high speeds. Upon arrival police learned that an SUV had driven into the South (Beatty) Saugeen River and at approximately 5:30 p.m. service members recovered the body of a deceased male.

On December 31, WGPS, in partnership with the Durham and Ayton Firefighters along with the OPP dive team, Air Unit and the Hanover Water Rescue Team, reported successfully locating a 2006 grey Pontiac Torrent license plate CFCM308 approximately 1 kilometre from the believed point of entry.

The vehicle is submerged 20' deep and is not visible from air or from the river banks. No other person(s) were found inside and WGPS said the vehicle will remain in the water until a safe opportunity for removal presents itself.

Police have worked with the coroner and have identified the deceased as 24 year old Gregory Steven Glenn McTavish of Wingham. The West Grey Police Criminal Investigations Bureau is seeking to identify all people known to associate with the involved vehicle which is registered to an address in Wingham. Anyone with information that may assist in this investigation is asked to call West Grey Police at 519-371-6911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
