Phoenix Farm & Retreat is one woman’s sustainable dream-come-to-fruition, powered by hybrid solar and a turbine system. Located on a 50 acre parcel of land in West Grey, Phoenix is comprised of 20 acres of arable land, in organic hay for small animals and horses, 15 acres of managed forest, and 10 acres which is home to a small barn, paddock, an outdoor riding arena and a spring-fed half acre pond.
Proprietor Laura Walker, who grew up in the city of Toronto, said she prefers the lifestyle of a pioneer and that her dream was to “create a home in tune with nature, wildlife, and a small environmental footprint.”
She gardens organically, cuts and splits her own wood from the self-sustaining bush lot, and said she designed Phoenix using local materials including cedar, pine, maple, spruce, and stone.
Phoenix Farm & Retreat will soon open its doors and host women’s 3 MMMs spa retreat (music, movement, and meditation) workshops on June 23, July 28, August 25, and September 15.
Walker, a retired Bluewater District School Board teacher who taught music, dance and movement for over 30 years, said she knows the lifestyle benefits for women to take part in fitness, healthy living, de-stressing, and recognizing their potential for creative expression.
“Women are the hub of the wheel in their families,” said Walker. “They are creative, resourceful, capable but challenged to balance their needs, those of their children, their partner, their work, and they deserve a ‘strong woman's day’ just for them to celebrate and rejuvenate themselves. Walker called the workshops “liberating” in a private and safe place.
“I’m very excited feeling that after 24 years of hard work and belief in the beauty and pristine quality of Grey County, I feel ready and prepared to share my property with others, whether local women or out-of-town women, who wish to experience the naturalized environment here on Phoenix Farm,” said Walker.
The retreat owner said that she has a soft spot for the Women’s Centre in Owen Sound and that it she will be contributing half of the proceeds earned on the farm to the “very beneficial organization.”
Walker said that as a single person she received encouragement and support from many strong women to follow her dreams since moving to Grey County in 1992 and that it inspired her to help empower women of all ages.
Phoenix Farm & Retreat will also be used as a spot for people to enjoy farm life and is available for weekly rental, spa retreats, and music therapy.
