Murder charges laid

One of the most shocking news stories of the year played out over the course of several months and ended with a gruesome discovery in the small village of Dornoch. The story put speculation to rest and garnered a lot of attention on our website early in 2018.

On March 17, members of the West Region OPP Canine Unit, West Region OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and OPP Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS) Unit were continuing a missing person investigation by searching a property near the village of Dornoch. Members of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) were conducting a search in Bell's Lake, Municipality of West Grey, also assisting with this investigation.

During the search of the property, officers located a dead body. It was later confirmed that the body was that of missing 20-year-old Nolan Panchyshyn of Southampton. Nolan was reported missing on December 20, 2017.

As a result of the police investigation, the Saugeen Shores Police Service and the West Region Crime Unit arrested two men.

46-year old Dwayne Hammond of Chatsworth Township was charged with:

Second degree murder, Indignity to a dead body, and Possession of a weapon while prohibited.

22-year old David Beattie of Chatsworth Township was charged with:

Indignity to a dead body, Fail to comply with probation.

After further investigation, an additional charge of second degree murder was laid against Beattie in October.

No further information is available as the case against these men is subject to a court ordered publication ban.
