Impaired driver involved in car accident on Hwy 10 in Southgate

June 26, 2020 at 6:47 pm Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision, involving two vehicles on Highway 10, near Southgate Road 24, in the Township of Southgate.

A black car, southbound on Highway 10, crossed the centre line and collided into a grey car, driving northbound. The driver of the black car was not injured but the other involved driver was transported to hospital via ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Southgate Fire Department and the Dufferin County Emergency Medical Services assisted officers at the scene.

Officers observed that the driver of the black car was displaying signs of impairment. The Standard Field Sobriety Test was administered at the roadside. The driver failed the test, was arrested for impaired operation by drug and transported to the detachment for further tests by a Drug Recognition Expert.

As a result of this investigation, Grey Bruce OPP have charged a 41 year-old man, from Dundalk, ON with the following offences:

  • operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and drugs, section 320.14(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada 
  • possession of a Schedule 1 substance - Methamphetamine, section 4(1) Controlled Drugs and Substance Act 
  • careless driving, section 130(1) Highway Traffic Act 
  • operate a motor vehicle without insurance, section 2(1)(a) Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

The accused was released and required to appear in court in Owen Sound on September 24, 2020.
