The Hanover Police Service is investigating a romance scam that has defrauded a local resident of approximately $117,000 since 2021. These cases are becoming more frequent with total losses reported in the hundreds of thousands of dollars every year that involve many victims in our community. With many more frauds going unreported by those who are victimized, these crimes are having a significant impact on Canadians coast to coast.
The romance scam typically involves someone posing as romantic interests online, often through social media or dating platforms. Over time, they build emotional connections with victims before requesting money under false pretences, such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or business investments. Hanover Police urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online interactions. Investigators are working diligently to identify those responsible and prevent further victimization. However, investigating these crimes present several challenges since many of those responsible for these frauds live offshore and not in Canada.
“These scams are deeply manipulative and emotionally damaging,” said Chief Knoll. We want to remind residents that no legitimate relationship should require secrecy or repeated financial support. Public education, awareness and prevention remains a key strategy to prevent victimization”.

At South Grey News, we endeavour to bring you truthful and factual, up-to-date local community news in a quick and easy-to-digest format that’s free of political bias. We believe this service is more important today than ever before, as social media has given rise to misinformation, largely unchecked by big corporations who put profits ahead of their responsibilities.
South Grey News does not have the resources of a big corporation. We are a small, locally owned-and-operated organization. Research, analysis and physical attendance at public meetings and community events requires considerable effort. But contributions from readers and advertisers, however big or small, go a long way to helping us deliver positive, open and honest journalism for this community.
