Chris Neil to be honoured with a full day of events June 23

Chris Neil honoured June 23

A full day of family fun is planned for Chris Neil Day on Saturday, June 23 at the Flesherton Arena and Kinplex with a special outdoor church service on Sunday, June 24. It follows Neil’s retirement as winger for the Ottawa Senators in 2017 and celebrates his successful 15-year career in the NHL.

Proceeds raised from the event will go to Rogers House, a palliative care facility in Ottawa, named after former NHL coach Roger Neilson.

The day begins with an appearance at the Flesherton and District Farmers’ Market where Chris will sign copies of Christopher, Ron Pegg’s newly published biography of the local hockey star. Neil will be at the market from 9-11 am to greet fans.

At 1pm, Neil will speak to many young sports winners, honoured on the ball diamond behind the arena. Games of skill will take over the arena grounds from 1-4 pm and are open to kids of all ages.

There will be an unveiling ceremony at the entrance to the arena at 4:30 pm with a barbecue dinner scheduled to begin at 5 pm inside. Tickets for the dinner are $25 each and are available at Bernard’s Quality Cars and Colton’s Garage in Flesherton or by calling 519-924-3538.

The outdoor church service will feature speeches from Chris and his wife Caitlin and will begin at 1:30 am in the pavilion on the south side of the arena. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. If weather turns inclement, the service will move inside the Kinplex.

This is your opportunity to meet Chris Neil, talk hockey and reflect on his Flesherton roots. You may also want to wish him a belated happy birthday as he turns 39 on Sunday, June 18.
